Health Risks of Snoring

For centuries snoring has been considered a joke. We often laugh at Uncle Stan and Grandpa for the noises they make at night. Often times we try to imitate the sounds, just so we can burst out laughing.

These days however, doctors have learned that there are several Health Risks of Snoring that could actually hold many health concerns.

Fatigue, high blood pressure and heart problems are just some of the underlining health issues that could affect a snorer.

The health risks of snoring that is the greatest however is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). People with extreme snoring could develop, or could already have sleep apnea. OSA have a lot of health risks that you need to be aware of to manage your health properly.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a very serious condition and you should always consult a doctor.

So what is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

“it is when airflow to the lungs is blocked because the tongue, muscles or soft tissues of the throat or soft palate collapses (because of over relaxing)  onto the back wall of the upper airway thereby creating the obstruction. Our brains are naturally tuned to alert us in times of trouble, so your brain will give a signal to alert you to wake up when your breathing is out of the ordinary, and then usually with a loud snort or gasp. This usually happens so quick that you are unlikely to even know about it. This can happen many times per night, and it is not uncommon that there can be several hundred ‘stop breathing and wake-up incidents’ during an 8-hour sleep period. This could undoubtedly lead to a situation of feeling chronically fatigued, because you don’t sleep enough.”

So, snoring may seem funny to many people, and there areNo Laughing Matter many jokes made up about us snorers, and some of them are actually amusing, but obstructive sleep apnea is no laughing matter.

There are several health risks that can accompany a OSA sufferer, and many are life threatening.

 

What are the Health Risks of sleep apnea?

Car accidents: I briefly mentioned this above. People with Obstructive Sleep Apnea are usually very fatigued because of a chronic lack of sleep. OSA sufferers could wake up several hundred times at night, leaving them un-rested in the morning. When you are exhausted it can happen that you just fall asleep without being able to help it, or you might just have a hard time keeping your eyes open. Driving while exhausted could be very dangerous for you and other road users. It has happened before that drivers just fall asleep, or dose off, in the middle of traffic.

Diabetes: It has been estimated in a study that almost 80% of Health Risks of Snoringpeople with diabetes also have sleep apnea. Awareness has therefore been raised into the connection between these two deceases. Studies are still being done to determine a clear connection, but it is known that if a person do not sleep enough, insulin may not be properly used by the body, which can lead to diabetes.

Being overweight is of course one of the causes of snoring and sleep apnea, it was also further found that diabetes are often diagnosed in these overweight individuals.

It has been proven that an obese person has a high chance to develop diabetes and OSA.

It was also found that hormones plays a big part in women being diagnosed with diabetes, snoring, and sleep apnea.

Heart disease: It was found that heart disease were veryHeart Health prevalent in people with sleep apnea. The reason for this could be because of a lack of oxygen to the brain, because of all the waking up periods the body cannot regulate the oxygen intake. The lack of oxygen then makes it difficult for the brain to control blood flow through the arteries, which could raise the chances that OSA sufferers could have a heart attack or stroke.

High blood pressure: People with Obstructive Sleep Apnea could have high blood pressure. The high amount of waking up periods could raise hormone levels, which could raise blood pressure levels. The lack of oxygen to the brain also means lack of oxygen to the blood cells, which can also raise your blood pressure.

High blood pressure can be very dangerous as it can cause heart damage, heart attack, stroke, and many other heart diseases.

High blood pressure is a very serious condition and should be treated by a doctor immediately.

Putting on weight: It is well known that people who are overweight and obese have a high chance of snoring and developing sleep apnea. What is not so well known is the fact that when you have OSA it could be very difficult to lose that excess weight.

The reason for this is because OSA could cause your body to release hormones that could actually increase the cravings for fatty foods and snacks.

 

Treat the Root of the Health Issue

When you however already have sleep apnea and there are signs of the above health problems, you need to treat the cause of these health issues, which in this instance is; Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

You should always seek medical treatment from a doctor or specialist when you suspect or have been diagnosed with sleep apnea.

There are various ways to treat OSA, which your doctor will explain.

Some of the treatments are, to use a CPAP machine (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), which regulates oxygen when you sleep. This machine will help you get enough oxygen to your brain and will prevent your airways from collapsing, thereby considerably improving OSA.

There are also other treatments available that specifically attempts to keep the airways open while you sleep, and your doctor can give you more information about these treatments.

Another OSA treatment option is surgery, but may not be a suitable treatment for everyone.
